Every year, October turns pink. It's not a trend or a simple campaign. It's a call to action, a profound reminder that prevention saves lives. Pink October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month worldwide, and one of the most important steps in prevention is getting a mammogram on time.
Why is a mammogram so important?
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breasts that can detect abnormalities even before they are palpable. In other words, it can identify signs of cancer at a very early stage, when treatment is much more effective and the chances of recovery are greater.
Breast cancer does not always present visible symptoms at the beginning, which is why early detection is key. Waiting to “feel something strange” may be too late.
Things you should know:
- 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.
- Breast cancer detected early has a survival rate of up to 98%.
- Mammograms can reduce breast cancer mortality by 20% to 40% in women over 40.
- It doesn't hurt, it's quick, and it only takes a few minutes.
When should you have a mammogram?
- If you are between 40 and 69 years old, you should have a mammogram every 1 to 2 years, even if you have no symptoms.
- If you have a family history of breast cancer, consult your doctor, as you may need to start earlier or have additional tests.
- At any age, if you notice changes in your breasts (lumps, skin changes, discharge, etc.), consult a professional.
This October, do it for yourself. Do it for those you love.
Getting a mammogram is not just a medical procedure, it is an act of self-love. It is also a message to our daughters, sisters, friends, and mothers: “Taking care of yourself is a priority.”
Don't put it off. Schedule your mammogram. Share this information. Invite another woman to do it with you. Remember: prevention starts with a decision.
